Why Winter Is Page, Arizona's Most Underrated Season

By The Wesley Team ·

Most people picture Page in July. Red rock, blue lake, a line of tour vans outside Antelope Canyon, and 100 degrees by lunch.

Come in January and it is a different town. Same canyons, same lake, same view from Horseshoe Bend. About half the people, cooler hikes, and the rock glows harder in low winter light.

Here is what winter in Page actually looks like, what changes, and who should come.

What the weather really does

Page sits at about 4,300 feet. Winter is cold at night and pleasant in the sun.

  • November: highs around 53°F, lows around 35°F

  • December and January: highs around 45°F, lows in the high 20s

  • February: highs around 51°F, lows around 32°F

Snow happens, but it is usually light and gone by afternoon. The thing to watch is ice. Shaded roads, metal stairs into the canyons, and the overlooks can freeze overnight. Wear shoes with real tread and you are fine.

Pack layers, a warm hat and gloves for sunrise. By noon you will be in a light jacket.

Antelope Canyon without the crowd

The famous light beams are a summer thing. In winter the sun sits too low to drop straight into the slot.

What you get instead is soft, even light, deeper reds and purples, and far fewer people in the canyon with you. Photographers who come for texture, not beams, often prefer it. Tours still run with Navajo-owned operators, and getting the time slot you want is much easier than in summer.

Inside the canyon it is cool, not cold. Layers again.

Horseshoe Bend at a civilized hour

In summer, sunrise at Horseshoe Bend means a 5 am alarm. In December the sun comes up after 7.

The walk is about 1.5 miles round trip on a hardened path, $10 a car, open sunrise to sunset. In summer that walk is a real heat risk at midday. In winter you can do it at noon and enjoy it. Our sunrise vs sunset guide has the timing details.

The lake goes quiet

Lake Powell in winter is still and nearly empty. The houseboats are tucked away, the water is glassy, and the light on the cliffs is gold for most of the afternoon.

Boat tour schedules shrink in the off-season, so check what is running before you plan around one. The overlooks cost nothing and never close. Wahweap Overlook and Lone Rock are both worth an hour, and so is a walk on the beach at Lone Rock with nobody else on it. Our Lake Powell water levels guide covers which ramps and beaches are open.

The clocks finally match

Arizona does not do daylight saving time. Utah and the Navajo Nation do. From March to early November that means Page, Monument Valley, Zion and Bryce can all be on different clocks, and phones near the line guess wrong.

After the first Sunday in November, everything lines up. Tour times, park hours and drive plans all read the same. It sounds small until you have missed a tour over it.

What is harder in winter

Honest list, so nothing surprises you:

  • The Grand Canyon North Rim closes for the season. The South Rim stays open, about 2.5 hours from Page.

  • Bryce Canyon sits near 8,000 to 9,000 feet and gets real snow. Check NPS conditions before you drive north.

  • Days are short. Plan one big thing in the morning and one in the afternoon, and be done by about 5.

  • Some restaurants and tour operators cut hours or close for a few weeks. Call ahead.

  • Monument Valley's scenic drive closes earlier in winter, and the park closes on Thanksgiving, the day after, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Who winter is perfect for

Photographers who want texture and empty frames. Couples who would rather have the overlook to themselves. Road trippers doing the Grand Circle who don't mind a jacket. Anyone who has seen the summer photos and wants to know what the place feels like when it is quiet.

Two nights is still the right amount. One morning for Antelope Canyon, one afternoon for the lake, one sunset at Horseshoe Bend, and time to actually sit down in between. Our 48 hours in Page guide lays it out, and our best time to visit guide compares every season.
