Wahweap Overlook: The Best Free View of Lake Powell Near Page

By The Wesley Team ·

Most people see Lake Powell for the first time from a car window on US-89. A few pull over. The ones who pull over at the right spot get the best free view in the whole Page area.

That spot is Wahweap Overlook. No ticket, no hike, no line. Here is how to find it, what you are looking at, and when to go.

Overlook vs Viewpoint: two different places

This trips up a lot of people, so let's clear it up first.

  • Wahweap Overlook sits on a hill just off US-89, outside the Glen Canyon fee area. It is free.

  • Wahweap Viewpoint is down on Lakeshore Drive, inside Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, closer to the water. You pay the park entry fee to get there (or use a park pass).

Both are good. The Overlook is higher, wider and free, which is why we send people there first.

How to get there

From Page, take US-89 north toward Utah. It is about 6 miles, roughly ten minutes from town.

  1. Pass the turnoff for Lakeshore Drive (that is the road to Wahweap Marina and the paid area).

  2. Keep going on US-89 past the Ferry Swale Road turnoff.

  3. Less than a mile later, turn right onto the short road that climbs the hill to the parking area.

If you are coming from Kanab and Utah, it is on your left as you drop toward Page. Watch for it. It is easy to miss at highway speed.

What you are looking at

From about 4,200 feet you get close to a full circle of view:

  • Wahweap Bay and the marina below you

  • Castle Rock and the long arms of Lake Powell reaching north

  • Navajo Mountain on the horizon, the big dome sacred to the Navajo

  • Tower Butte and the cliffs around Page to the south

There is a small parking area, a few benches and an interpretive sign. No restrooms, no water. Bring both if you plan to stay for sunset.

When to go

Sunset is the classic. The cliffs light up orange, the lake goes dark blue, and then the whole sky takes a turn. Stay 20 minutes past sunset. That is usually when the color peaks.

Sunrise is quieter and just as good, with the light hitting Navajo Mountain first.

Midday works for a quick stop, but the light is flat and in summer it is hot with no real shade.

Plan 15 minutes for a look, an hour if you bring a picnic for golden hour.

A good evening plan

Horseshoe Bend gets the sunset crowds. If you have two evenings in Page, give one to Horseshoe Bend and one to Wahweap Overlook. You will likely have the overlook almost to yourself.

Or stack them. Do Horseshoe Bend in the late afternoon, then drive 15 minutes north for sunset at the overlook. Our Horseshoe Bend guide has the timing, and our photography spots guide has more places to shoot.
