Grand Canyon to Zion: the complete drive guide (and where to sleep in the middle)

Two of the most famous parks in America sit about four hours apart. Most people treat that gap as something to survive.

That is the mistake. The gap is the good part.

Between the Grand Canyon and Zion you pass Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, Lake Powell, the Vermilion Cliffs, and the road to The Wave. All of it clusters around one small town: Page, Arizona. You can blow through in a day and see a parking lot. Or you can stop for two nights and see the things people fly across oceans for.

This guide covers the drive both directions, what to book before you leave home, and how to build the middle of the trip so you are not eating gas station lunch at 2 p.m. wondering where the day went.

The short version

• Direct drive, no stops: about 4 hours, Grand Canyon South Rim to Zion, going through Page and Kanab.[1]

• Honest drive, with stops: two days. Possibly three.

• The one thing to book first: an Antelope Canyon tour. Everything else on this route bends. That one does not.

• Best place to break the drive: Page. It sits almost exactly in the middle and it is the only town on the route with the big attractions inside a 15 minute radius.

The route, step by step

Grand Canyon South Rim to Page: about 2.5 hours

Leave the South Rim on AZ-64 east. This is the Desert View Drive, and it is the most underrated stretch of the whole park. Six overlooks, almost no crowds compared to Grand Canyon Village, and the Desert View Watchtower at the end.

Give yourself an extra hour here. You will want it.

At Cameron, you meet US-89 and turn north. The next 90 minutes is open Navajo Nation country, wide and quiet, with the Echo Cliffs running along your right shoulder. There is one worthwhile stop: the Cameron Trading Post, for the bridge over the Little Colorado gorge and a bathroom that is not a bush.

Then you crest a rise and the water shows up. That is Lake Powell, and you are in Page.

Page: this is where you stop

Page is 2.5 hours from the Grand Canyon and about 2 hours from Zion. It is not the halfway point by mileage so much as by sense. Everything hard to reach in this region is easy to reach from here:

No other town on the Grand Circle can put all of that inside a two hour ring. That is not marketing, it is a map.

Page to Zion: about 2 hours

US-89 north out of Page, across the Utah line at Big Water, past the Grand Staircase Escalante visitor center, and into Kanab. Kanab is a good lunch stop and the last real town before Zion.

From Kanab you have two choices:

The fast way. US-89 to Mt. Carmel Junction, then UT-9 west through the Zion Mount Carmel Tunnel and into the park. About an hour from Kanab. The tunnel itself is worth the drive. It was blasted through solid sandstone in the 1920s and it spits you out on the switchbacks above Zion Canyon with no warning at all.

The tunnel rule changed in 2026, and most trip guides still have it wrong. The old system let oversized vehicles through on a paid permit with a ranger escort, holding the tunnel one way while you passed. That system was eliminated on June 7, 2026. It was not replaced with a bigger fee or a harder permit. It was replaced with an outright ban. Vehicles over 11 feet 4 inches tall, 7 feet 10 inches wide including mirrors, 35 feet 9 inches long, or 50,000 pounds are now prohibited from the entire 10.7-mile stretch of UT-9 between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance. [2] RVs, most trucks with campers, and some vans are over at least one of those limits. There is no escort left to book and no workaround to buy. If you are oversized, take the scenic way below and budget the extra two hours.

The scenic way. Kanab to Zion the long way, via UT-9 through Hurricane and up into Springdale from the west. Slower, no tunnel, and it drops you at the main park entrance.

Doing it in reverse: Zion to Grand Canyon

Same route, flipped, with one important note. If you are heading south and the North Rim is open, it is only about 2.5 hours from Page and it is a completely different park from the South Rim. Fewer people, taller trees, colder air, and the same canyon from the other side. The North Rim closes seasonally, usually mid October through mid May, so check before you route around it.

What to book before you leave home

This is the part that separates a good trip from a frustrating one. Three things on this route sell out or lock you out, and none of them are hotels.

1. Antelope Canyon tours. Every visit requires a Navajo guided tour. There is no self guided option. Summer and beam season midday slots go weeks to months ahead, and travelers on forums routinely report finding their dates gone.[3] Book the canyon first, then build the trip around it. 2. The Wave permit, if you want it. Coyote Buttes North runs on a lottery. The advanced lottery is four months out. The daily lottery requires you to physically be inside a geofenced area, and Page is inside it.[4] That is a real reason to sleep here instead of driving through. Details in our Wave lottery guide.

3. The Zion shuttle, in season. Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is shuttle only most of the year. Check the current system before you arrive, because the rules have changed more than once.

Everything else, including where you eat, can be figured out on the day.

The two nights in Page argument

Here is the honest case, and then you can decide.

Page has three headline attractions and they each demand a different time of day.

• Antelope Canyon is best in the middle of the day. In beam season, roughly late March to early October, the light shafts show up near midday when the sun is high enough to reach the canyon floor.

• Horseshoe Bend is a sunrise or sunset thing. At noon in July it is a hot walk to a flat photo. At golden hour it is the thing you came for. We broke down which one to pick in sunrise vs sunset at Horseshoe Bend.

• Lake Powell wants a morning. Boat tours and kayak rentals leave early, and the wind picks up in the afternoon.

You cannot stack a midday canyon tour, a sunset rim walk, and a morning on the water into one night's stay. The math does not work. With two nights you get all three and you never rush.

One more thing people underestimate: the drive itself is tiring. Grand Canyon to Zion in one push, with stops, is a 7 to 9 hour day by the time you have parked, walked, waited, and eaten. Splitting it in half turns a slog into a trip.

A two night Page plan that actually works

Day 1, arrive from the Grand Canyon. Get in mid afternoon. Check in, drop the bags, drink water. At Page's elevation in summer you will be more dehydrated than you feel. Head to Horseshoe Bend about 90 minutes before sunset. Parking is $10 per vehicle and the gate stops admitting visitors at sunset, so do not cut it close.[5] Dinner in town after.

Day 2, the full day. Morning on Lake Powell if you booked something, or the Glen Canyon Dam overlook and the Powell Museum if you did not. Midday Antelope Canyon tour. Late afternoon, rest. This is the day the second night pays for itself.

Day 3, leave for Zion. Get out by 9 a.m. Lunch in Kanab. In Zion by early afternoon with the whole evening ahead of you.

If you only have one night, cut Lake Powell. Do Horseshoe Bend at sunset on arrival, Antelope Canyon in the morning, and be on the road by noon. It works. It just does not leave much room.

Where to sleep in the middle

Page has around 25 places to stay and most of them are the same beige highway box you would find in any town off an interstate. For a long time that was the whole menu.

Is it worth stopping in Page between the Grand Canyon and Zion?

Yes, and two nights beats one. Horseshoe Bend is a sunrise or sunset attraction, Antelope Canyon is a midday attraction, and Lake Powell is a morning attraction. One night forces you to skip two of the three.

Which is closer to Zion, Page or the Grand Canyon?

Page. It is about 2 hours from Zion. The Grand Canyon South Rim is about 4 hours.

Can I drive from the Grand Canyon to Zion in one day?

You can. It is a long day with stops, usually 7 to 9 hours door to door. If you are on a tight schedule it is doable. If you have any flexibility, split it.

What is the best order, Grand Canyon first or Zion first?

Either works. If you are flying into Las Vegas, Zion first is a shorter first drive. If you are flying into Phoenix, the Grand Canyon first makes more sense. Page sits in the middle either way.
